02/28/19 -- HCS HB 225 -- Creates a new education grant program
HCS HB 225, introduced by Representative Kathryn Swan (Republican - District 147) creates a new grant program allowing Missouri citizens to attend an approved Missouri postsecondary institution of their choice.
This is completely outside the role of government. This bill, which has an estimated fiscal cost of $18 million dollars per year, is completely unnecessary, and does nothing to protect individual rights. To the contrary, it is essentially an income redistribution program that uses taxpayer dollars to pay for a subset of the population's college. The idea that we'd be doing this for "workforce development" purposes is silly -- it's been well established that a sizable percentage of the jobs that Missouri employers are having trouble filling don't require postsecondary degrees.
I voted "no" on this, as did a decent portion of the body. Unfortunately, despite this resistance, it did end up passing.
